Factors affecting the dispersion of deer are reviewed, and their relevance to the management of British species. Most of the information is taken from studies of European Red and Roe deer, and also from North American species. Home range/territory size is discussed; individual home range sizes vary within species, and are largely associated with habitat structure and/or climate. It is suggested that traditional behaviour and social factors may be important in limiting home range size and deer distribution. The role of food, shelter and freedom from disturbance are reviewed in relation to deer dispersion and movements. It is suggested that deer will occupy areas with a good combination of all the major factors rather than the best of any one. Suggestions for research on British species, with a view to management, are put forward.  相似文献

Nectar-feeding birds are prominent in many parts of the world, and vary with respect to body size. Despite the availability of considerable morphometric data, few concerted efforts have been made to assess the influence of attributes such as mass, wing length and leg morphology upon the speed, acceleration, mode and energetic cost of movement by birds between flowers when foraging for nectar. This review attempts to consolidate and interpret available data and highlight areas where further investigations appear warranted. Australian honeyeaters are generally larger, and American hummingbirds smaller, than Hawaiian honeycreepers and sunbirds of Africa or Asia. Sunbirds, honeyeaters and honeycreepers generally perch while extracting nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds usually hover, apparently because suitable perches close to flowers are lacking, and not because hovering increases the speed at which flowers can be visited. Honeyeaters move from one flower to another at speeds that are at least as great as those for hummingbirds. Most passerine nectarivores need to ingest more nectar per day than hummingbirds in order to maintain energy balance, some species devoting more than 60% of the day to foraging. The major consequence of reduced foraging activity by hummingbirds, which spend only 5–30% of the day in this manner, appears to be male emancipation from nest construction and care of offspring. Large nectarivores have a greater capacity to store surplus food and to fast than smaller birds, and so can take advantage of short-lived peaks in nectar abundance. Nectarivores such as honeyeaters should therefore be favoured by the rapid diurnal changes in nectar availability which are characteristic of many Australian and African habitats. Body mass also determines the likely access to rich sources of nectar through size-related interspecific dominance hierarchies. In all families, larger species tend to monopolize the most rewarding nectar supplies, forcing smaller subordinate species to use poorer, more scattered sources. Within particular species, males usually have longer wings and greater masses than females. These variations imply that the two sexes differ with regard to their foraging ecology, although few supporting data are currently available.  相似文献

RFamide peptides have been localized to a number of neuronsof the CNS of the leech, Hirudo medicinalis, using immunocytochemicaltechniques. The majority of this immunoreactivity appears tobe due to the peptide FMRFamide. Most of the identified RFamideimmunoreactive cells are cholinergic motor neurons, though someare interneurons. Superfused FMRFamide is active on the targetsof these identified neurons; in a few well studied cases, ithas been possible to show that FMRFamide mimics a specific physiologicalaction of an identified neuron on its target. In the leech as in other phyla where they occur, RFamide peptidesare widely distributed in neurons, and are neuromodulators withdiverse physiological effects.  相似文献

Vegetative anatomy and systematics of subtribe Dendrobiinae (Orchidaceae)   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Anatomy of leaf, stem, and root of more than 100 species in subtribe Dendrobiinae (Orchidaceae) was studied with the light microscope to provide a comparative anatomical treatment of these organs, to serve as an independent source of evidence that might be taxonomically important, and to recommend such reinterpretations of existing classifications as are suggested by a phylogenetic assessment of data. We based our classification on that of Rudolf Schlechter as the most complete and widely accepted today. We found that the anatomy of plants in subtribe Dendrobiinae reflects a high degree of morphological diversity, and many of the anatomical characters appear to be homoplasous. When these anatomical data are used to interpret the systematic relationships among the genera, they indicate that Dendrobium is not monophyletic and that Cadetia and Pseuderia are apparently nested within the structure of Dendrobium when section Grastidium is chosen as a functional outgroup. Lack of resolution in the strict consensus tree illustrates the difficulty of determining the phylogenetic relationships of many of Schlechter's sections using anatomical characters. Nevertheless, we recommend that his sectional classification, with appropriate modifications based on available data, be retained for the present, pending a more detailed understanding of the phylogeny of Dendrobiinae based on morphology, micromorphology, anatomy, and DNA studies.  相似文献

The hypothesis that increased root competition can lower theslope and/or intercept of the self-thinning line traversed byplant populations was tested using localized placement of nutrientsto increase root competition. Localized placement of nutrientswill result in increased root competition, if average inter-rootdistances are reduced, and if nutrients are in limiting supply.It was predicted that high-density, nutrient-limited populationsof Ocimum basilicum L. grown with localized placement of nutrientswould self-thin along a lower biomass–density line thannon-localized controls. This was tested at two fertility levelson a soil-based potting medium in expt 1, and at one fertilitylevel on washed sand in expt 2. Localized placement of nutrients significantly reduced the elevation(intercept) of the self-thinning line for both shoot and rootbiomass in expt 2. In expt 1, at the higher-fertility level,localized placement of nutrients had no significant effect;at the lower fertility level, localization had no significanteffect on thinning lines for shoot biomass, and resulted ina zero slope of the thinning line for root biomass. Canopy-based models of self-thinning failed to account for thereduction in the thinning-line intercept observed in expt 2.In both experiments, localized placement of nutrients resultedin a higher proportion of total root length being located inthe localization zone, which would result in a reduction inthe average inter-root distance. This would intensify root competitionunder conditions of nutrient limitation. The hypothesis thatintensified root competition would lower the self-thinning lineis supported by the results of expt 2. Abstract Surveys of mating-system parameters in populations of the annual, self-compatible, tristylous, emergent aquatic, Eichhornia paniculata (Pontederiaceae) from N.E. Brazil and Jamaica have indicated that the species exhibits a wide range of outcrossing rates. To investigate whether temporal variation in outcrossing rate was also a feature of populations, open-pollinated families were sampled from five populations of contrasting style morph structure from N.E. Brazil over three consecutive years (1987–1989). Multilocus estimates of outcrossing rate ( t ) were obtained from assays of isozyme polymorphisms using starch gel electrophoresis. There was significant variation both among populations and between years in the frequency of outcrossing. Outcrossing in three tristylous populations was high ( t > 0.80), with relatively small fluctuations occurring over the three-year sampling period. In contrast, in a dimorphic and monomorphic population considerable self-fertilization occurred and the frequency of outcrossing declined significantly from 1987 to 1989 in both populations. In the dimorphic population, increased selfing was associated with a marked reduction in population size and an increase in the frequency of selfing variants of the mid-styled morph. The significance of temporal variation in outcrossing frequency in plant populations is discussed in relation to its effect on population genetic structure and recent models of mating-system evolution.  相似文献

A hardground from the Upper Ordovician Dillsboro Formation near Dillsboro, Indiana, U.S.A., preserves an assemblage of encrusting and boring fossils on both top and bottom surfaces. The slab is inferred to have been an undercut ledge, and the dominant fossils of the assemblage, holdfasts of the tube-building worm Sphenothallus and trepostome bryozoans, are prevalent on both sides. The clumping of Sphenothallus holdfasts has been statistically demonstrated using a nearest-neighbor technique. Sphenothallus has also been shown to withstand overgrowth in interactions with bryozoans.  相似文献

1. Little Mere, U.K., received large quantities of sewage effluent until 1991, when the effluent was diverted. Experiments, carried out in mesocosms in 1992 and 1993, were designed to predict the effects of: (i) reduced external nutrient loading; (ii) reduced internal loading from the sediment; and (iii) recolonization by fish of the better aerated water. Treatments included isolation of the water from the underlying sediment or exposure to the sediment (which lacked plants in 1992, but was covered by Potamogeton berchtoldii in 1993) crossed with different population densities of Rutilus rutilus in 1992 and of Perca fluviatilis in 1993.
2. Exposure to sediment (as opposed to isolation from it) resulted in no net change in the biovolumes of most major algal groups, but this masked major complementary effects on individual species. The experiments showed a decreasing influence of the sediment, between 1992 and 1993, in determining water chemistry, and an increasing pH between years but no increase in cyanophyte dominance. This had been anticipated because a lake upstream provides abundant inocula, and conditions in Little Mere after diversion of effluent were expected to favour cyanophytes.
3. Roach and perch additions to the mesocosms resulted in reductions in Daphnia populations but increases in numbers of small Cladocera and copepods. Plant-associated Cladocera were unaffected by fish. The presence of submerged plants to some extent reduced fish predation effects on Daphnia hyalina .
4. The experimental results in general accurately predicted subsequent events in the open lake.  相似文献
